The Tom Farrell Institute was pleased to host a delegation from the Institute of Resource, Environment and Sustainable Development Research (IRESD) at Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. The visitors included including Professor ZHANG Jie (Director), Professor CHEN Honglei (Deputy Director), Professor LI Guangmin (Deputy Director), and Dr. XIE Zixiong (researcher) from IRESD.
The delegation was arranged by Prof Hao Tan from University of Newcastle.
The IRESD current projects include analysing the cost-benefits of using forests as carbon sinks.
The delegation were particularly interested in Australia's Mine Rehabilitation, the regulations, rehab bonds, and regulatory structure.
Dr Jose F. Martin Duque (visiting academic from Complutense University of Madrid) and Assoc Prof Greg Hancock (University of Newcastle) spoke on the use of mining landscape reclamation tools and models, such as GeoFluv and SIBIERIA and a best practice guide for mine rehabilitation Jose is developing for the European Union.
It is hoped that members of IRESD will attend next year's Mine Rehab Conference run by the Tom Farrell Institute.
