Abstract

How Newcastle City Council is supporting active transport.

Newcastle City Council is supporting active transport in the CBD and suburbs through strategies, plans and projects. The talk will outline these strategies and projects and discuss the key issues facing Council when developing these projects.

In the CBD, key elements of active transport are being advanced in the design of the Newcastle City Centre and the Smart City Strategy is bringing new technology and thinking to support active transport. In the suburbs, Council strategies are providing the necessary guidance to deliver better active transport infrastructure across the local government area. The Newcastle Transport Strategy has many actions, relating to walking and cycling and the local centres program is designing and delivering improved walking and cycling facilities in local and neighbourhood centres. Better mapping of cycling networks are also underway and the Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan program delivers millions of dollars of improvements to walking paths every year. However, there are always issues with retrofitting an existing urban environment with high standard active transport facilities.
